In one of the worst acts of genocide in history, over ten million people, including six million Jews, were massacred by the Nazi regime in Germany. Holocaust education is essential to prevent this catastrophic episode of history from repeating itself.
- between 1933 and 1945, two thirds of all the Jews in Europe were killed by the Nazis
- many victims were transported to concentration camps by train and murdered with poison gas on arrival
- others perished from deplorable conditions in the camps (disease, exhaustion, and starvation)
- others were simply shot and buried in mass graves
- gypsies, homosexuals, and other minorities were also persecuted
